What is the Difference Between a Pump and a Booster Pump?
A booster pool pump works the same way any pump works. A booster pump is essentially an extra pump used to increase the water pressure in the pool plumbing system. It can be used for a variety of purposes in pools, most often to provide the extra pressure needed by high-side pool cleaners. A pressure-side pool cleaner is a pool cleaning machine that moves around your pool and removes dirt, grime, and debris from the pool.
Most pressure cleaners require 30 PSI, but those with a PSI of 15-17 do not require a booster pump. A booster pump creates better flow and circulation. It increases the efficiency of the pool filtration system. The booster pump enters the return line of the filter and nozzle. After the water is filtered, the booster pump draws the clean water back into the pool at higher pressure.
A booster pump consists of a motor, impeller, water inlet, and outlet, and some even have sensing devices to regulate pressure and water flow. The motor drives the impeller to rotate, and the impeller sucks the water from the water inlet and pushes it out from the water outlet. Booster pumps operate on centrifugal force and use one or more impellers to draw water. The more impellers used, the higher the water pressure.
The image below shows a schematic of how a booster pump would be installed on a traditional pool equipment layout.
Advantages of Using a Booster Pump
Booster pumps are an inexpensive and easy way to improve the water quality of your pool while reducing operating costs. It also ensures that you get the most out of your pool cleaner. Adding an extra pump will improve filtration, speed up pool warm-up time, and improve chlorine distribution. You also have the option to increase water pressure when needed.
Requirements for a Successful Booster Pump
Things to consider for booster pumps are 120 or 240V power circuits with a dedicated circuit breaker, pump timer, plumbing, pump mounting pads, and anti-vibration mounts. Electrical requirements can be found on the pump and in the operator's manual for each model or brand of pump. Best to make sure you have a designated area to install it in, it needs to be somewhere it won't get wet. If you don't want it making a bunch of noise, it's best to put it on a concrete pad so it doesn't make a bunch of noise. An automatic timer isn't needed, but it helps so you don't forget to turn it on or off.
In conclusion, booster pumps are a great option if you need an extra boost for your pressure-side pool cleaner. Every swimming pool relies on some kind of pump that requires a certain amount of water pressure. The benefit of a booster pump is that you can control the water pressure whenever you want.
